Geek to Chic

Dress, Blazer- Ross old/ Shoes- Zigi Soho Camera old/ Bracelets- F21

"Dress for the life you want to live." I came across this quote on twitter and immediately printed and pinned it to my vision board.  It inspired me to switch up my school wardrobe.  I know you must be thinking, but you're a fashion blogger.  At school I'm just Tia...  It's easy to justify not putting in too much effort when you spend the bulk of the day in a lab coat, so I'm challenging myself to adhere to that quote that resonated with me so much.  No that doesn't mean a dress and heels everyday, but certainly some days...  It just means putting forth effort and being more pulled together overall so that I don't feel awkward when I make eye contact with that cute guy on the elevator.  I can also meet the girls for dinner after school without having to go home and make a complete transformation from geek to chic.  Have you come across any quotes lately that have inspired you?

This was my first study-free weekend!  To celebrate, I squeezed as much into it as I could; GNO Friday, 2 events Saturday, a birthday party,  and Father's Day din on Sunday.  I needed to let my hair down and I absolutely did!  It was also great to reconnect with my blogger boos!!! Event #1 was Walmart's Shop The Aisle where local Atl bloggers assisted naturals on product selection, styling, etc...  Although I have enough hair products to start a small store, I somehow always manage to find a new product to try.  I'm finally over the shock of my haircut and have started dry styling again.  I was in need of a moisturizing product so this event was the perfect solution to both my dry hair and re-entering the social scene ;).

All Grown Up

This has been a year of firsts and lasts for the kiddos and I.  My son "graduated" from middle school and attended his very first formal dance *weeps uncontrollably*.  High school here he comes!!!  There was a strict dress code for the dance Thank God so none of the kids showed up looking like those ghetto prom pics we see floating around the internet.  The girls had to wear floor length white dresses and the boys black suits.  I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on a suit he'll only wear once so I decided to hit up the thrift stores.  My girl Kerrie helped me find this slick Jos A Bank suit jacket as well as the shirt at Last Chance thrift store.  I got both pieces for less than $10.  I found the pants at Value Village for $5.  His entire suit was less than $15!!!  He totally rocked it!  So proud of this kid!!!

It's been a long time...

Hi guys!!!  I know it's been a while!  I've spent the last several weeks studying and taking qualifying exams for my PhD in Biomedical Science so I've been looking like this...

From doing a lot of this!

My exams are finally over, whew! So now I'm just waiting for results...  I'm super excited to be back blogging and back to life!!!  I love science, but having balance is very important.  I haven't put an outfit together in forever and I'm pretty sure I've put on a couple pounds with all that late night studying (and snacking).  I've promised myself I'll do 2 things tomorrow outside of getting my life back in order, go running and take blog pics.  *Spoiler Alert*  act like you don't see the spare tire around my waist :P.  In the meantime, check out this feature on CNN from the Thrifting Atlanta Fashion Show I took part in a couple of months ago http://www.cnn.com/2013/06/11/living/thrift-store-style/index.html

Outfit: Blazer, Shorts- Old Navy old/ Shirt- UO/ Shoes- Guess/ Watch- DKNY/ Earrings- Bebe

Last week I didn't get a chance to participate in Style Me Friday and I was really bummed.  I was determined to get back in the game this week!  The challenge for this week is the short suit.  My outfit isn't a suit per se, rather separates both from Old Navy purchased at different times...possibly different years.  I rescued both pieces from my "to donate" box earlier this year.  Don't know why I was giving away a white blazer?!  I thought the shorts were outdated, but thankfully I had the foresight to keep them since Bermuda shorts are making a come back.  I also rediscovered these T-strap Guess heels which made this look way more pulled together than the flip-flops I wore shopping after taking pics :).  Prissy do you remember you helped me find these???  Prissy is a shoe shopping genius!  Head over to The Fashionista Next Door to see how others rocked their short suits! Happy Fridayyy!

Overalls anyone???

Outfit: Overalls- Buffalo Exchange/ Tank- F21/ Lace Duster- Lily Kai/ Wanted Brave Booties/ Lucky Brand Bracelet

Words cannot express how much I love these overalls!  I had been on the hunt for a pair for months when I came across these at Buffalo Exchange.  The brand is BDG by Urban Outfitters.  They fit like a glove.  In fact, I wish all my jeans fit like this!  I would personally like to thank the individual that sold or swapped these at Buffalo Exchange.  I foresee them being a part of my wardrobe for a looong time.  If you haven't checked out Buffalo Exchange, you definitely should.  They have a smorgasbord of unique pieces that you're not likely to find in one place!  Here's another example of what you can find there.

Brit Girl Does: The Great Gatsby

L to R:

Outfit: Shirt, Pants- Express old / Vest- Banana Republic thrifted / Hat, Socks- UO / Shoes- Wanted
On Friday I had the opportunity to see The Great Gatsby.  Admittedly I'm not a big movie buff, but it had me glued from start to finish.  The costumes and scenery definitely conveyed the feeling of being in the 1920s.  Being dressed for the occasion also contributed to this feeling.  Then just as you felt immersed in the early twentieth century, you were whisked forward 80 years to bottles being popped and Jay Z's New York anthem.  If I read this book in high school, I don't remember it at all.  I definitely am planning to read it now, after finals of course :).  Ultimately it was a love story. Boy was Leo in love!  Imagine someone building you a castle fit for a queen and you not even knowing it or he was there.  Okay, I've said to much...  If you didn't get a chance to see the movie this weekend, definitely go check it out.  If you did see it, what did you think???

Tia Lou
